#1 Recruiting Fallacy (and How to Actually Get Noticed)

If your high school recruiting strategy consists of sitting back, playing well, and waiting to be discovered, you might be setting yourself up for disappointment. One of the biggest fallacies in high school sports is believing that if you’re good enough, college coaches will magically find you.

Unless you are consistently ranked in the top 1% nationally, waiting simply doesn't work. Here is the reality: college coaching staffs receive anywhere from 100 to 200 emails every single day from prospective student-athletes, and they rarely have the time or budget to scout every field in the country.

To land on a program's radar, you must drive the process yourself. Here are four actionable tips to proactively stand out on the recruiting trail:

  • Craft Short, Impactful Highlight Reels: Keep your video under 3 to 4 minutes. Lead with your strongest plays right away and clearly identify yourself on screen with your jersey number, position, and graduation year.

  • Send Targeted, Personalized Emails: Personalize every message to schools that align with your academic, athletic, cultural, and financial goals. Clearly outline how you can add value to their specific program—highlighting unique athletic assets like a long throw or strong heading ability.

  • Be Strategic with ID Camps & Showcases: Stop attending every showcase event blindly. Focus your time and budget on selective ID camps hosted by programs where your athletic profile and academic stats realistically fit.

  • Build a Master Contact List: Organization is key to proactive recruitment. Use a dedicated spreadsheet to track every email sent, coach response received, and scheduled follow-up.

Take Control of Your Recruiting Journey Waiting to be noticed is a gamble you don't need to take. By taking proactive steps—reaching out directly, refining your highlight reel, and targeting the right programs—you put your athletic future in your own hands.
